Another Loss in Lamberton

7/10/13

The Tigers have not found much success in Lamberton over the years. That trend continued on Wednesday night when Springfield visited the American Division leading Long Sox. While their hit totals were similar, Lamberton was able to bunch together their hits and take advantage of four Tiger errors on their way to a 4-1 win.

Veteran right hander Colby Pack took the hill for the Long Sox. Springfield was able to get two base runners in each of the first two innings, but Pack worked his way out of the jams without any damage.

Lamberton started the bottom of the first with a double from Donald Strand. A sac bunt and a ground out followed as the Long Sox grabbed a 1-0 lead off Springfield starter Alex Frank.

After working through some control issues in the first few innings, Pack found his groove. Springfield was able to get one hit in every inning, starting in the fourth through the eighth. Pack made a habit of stranding those runners and facing just one batter over the minimum in each inning four through seven.

Frank was finding his groove until a rough spot in the bottom of the fourth. The Long Sox put together three straight hits and plated two runs with the help of a Tiger miscue.

With the score 3-0, the Long Sox extended their lead in the bottom of the seventh. A leadoff infield single got them going. A sacrifice bunt followed, then a pair of Springfield errors pushed the lead to four before the Tigers turned their third double-play of the game to get out of the mess.

Ryan Sturm drew a one-out walk in the top of the eighth. Christian Loomis followed with a two bagger to deep left-center field. This made the score 4-1.

Jacob Jenniges relieved Pack in the top of the ninth and worked a scoreless final frame to secure the 4-1 win.

Christian Loomis and Zach Bisel led the way with the bats for the Tigers with two hits each. Brandon Wilhelmi and Matt Vogel added the other two Springfield knocks. Lamberton had hits from all but two of their starters with Landon Erickson clubbing two doubles to lead the team. Colby Pack earned the win, working eight innings, allowing one earned run on six hits with five strikeouts. Alex Frank was tagged with his first loss of the season, going the distance for Springfield, allowing four runs, two earned, on eight hits with three strikeouts.

The loss drops the Tigers to 12-6 in the Tomahawk East and 14-9 overall on the year. Next up, the Tigers will head to New Ulm to battle the other division leader in the Brewers on Sunday night at Johnson Park. Go Tigers!

NOTES: Since the Long Sox entered the league in 2002, Springfield has won just twice in Lamberton. Those wins came in 2003 and 2006...The win for Lamberton clinched their eleventh consecutive Tomahawk East League division title.
