Tigers Hold On to Defeat Indians

6/30/13

Springfield wrapped up the annual Riverside Days celebration on Sunday night as the Tigers played host to Sleepy Eye for a 7pm contest. Both teams scored runs early and often, with the teams combining to score in all but three of the first ten half innings. Sleepy Eye had opportunities late in the game, but were unable to take advantage, making the final 8-5.

Springfield went to work in the bottom of the first inning with Brandon Wilhelmi drawing a walk. After stealing second, Wilhelmi came around to score on a base hit by Alex Fink. Ryan Sturm followed by crushing a triple to drive in Springfield's second run. Christian Loomis drew a walk and Matt Vogel pushed the lead to three with a single to score Sturm.

Unfortunately, the Springfield runs woke up the Sleepy Eye bats in the second as they faced Alex Frank. Scott Salfer and Kelly Krzmarzick began the inning with a single, followed by a double to get Sleepy Eye on the board. A Tiger miscue after two were out gave the Indians their second run to make it 3-2.

It was another triple that keyed the offense for Springfield in the bottom of the second. Jacob Menage was hit by a pitch and Fink followed by launching a triple to deep right-center field. Loomis singled to give the Tigers back a three run lead, 5-2.

Another Tiger error and a bases-loaded walk helped Sleepy Eye hang around. Sleepy Eye matched Springfield's two runs with two more of their own in the top of the third to get back to within one, 5-4.

The scoring barrage continued in the home half of the third with yet another triple. Zach Bisel reached on a one-out base hit. This time it was Wilhelmi's turn. He ripped a triple to plate Bisel. Menage followed with a sac fly to bring in Wilhelmi and return the Tiger lead to three.

In the fourth inning, Frank and Sleepy Eye starter John Mangen exchanged zeros. It was the first frame of the game in which neither team scored.

Scoring resumed in the fifth when Salfer singled to start the inning. A balk moved him to second and Derek Nachreiner came through with a two-out single to cut the Tiger lead to two runs. The Indians went to the bullpen to bring on Matt Helget in the bottom of the fifth. Springfield, again, matched the Sleepy Eye run in the top of the inning with one of their own. Bisel and Fink combined with a walk and base hit to make the score 8-5.

After a scoreless sixth, Frank ran into trouble in the seventh. He was lifted and Jason Nachreiner took over the mound duties with the tying run at the plate. It took Nachreiner just three pitches to get out of the jam with a strikeout, preserving the three run lead.

Matt Helget allowed a pair of base runners in the seventh, but kept the Tigers stuck at eight on the scoreboard for the remainder of the contest. The ninth began with Springfield's fourth error of the night. A hit batter and base on balls packed the sacks, putting the tying run at first base. Nachreiner dug deep to notch strikeouts on the final two batters to slam the door and give Springfield an 8-5 win.

Alex Fink had another big night at the plate, stroking four hits with three runs batted in. Brandon Wilhelmi, Christian Loomis and Matt Vogel had two hits each. Ryan Sturm, Shawn Anderson, and Zach Bisel rounded out the Tiger offensive output with one hit each. Scott Salfer also had a four hit night for Sleepy Eye. Sean Mathiowetz was close behind with three hits in the game. Alex Frank earned his fourth win of the season, going six and two-thirds innings, allowing five runs, three earned, on nine hits with four strikeouts. John Mangen was tagged with the loss, working the first four innings, surrendering seven runs on eleven hits with two strikeouts. Jason Nachreiner picked up a save working the final two and one-third innings, allowing just one hit while fanning six.

The win improves the Tigers to 12-7 overall and 10-5 in Tomahawk East League play. They will take a break from league play with an exhibition game on Tuesday night against Hadley. The contest is scheduled for an 8pm first pitch at Riverside Park. See you at the yard!

NOTES: Springfield's thirteen hits in the ballgame was the first time they've had double-digits in the hit column since playing Essig on 6/19. It also marked a season high, with the previous high of twelve coming in the same ballgame ...The Tigers are now 3-3 with their new red jerseys, having won three of their last four games...Alex Frank will be the Tigers' lone representative in the Tomahawk East League All-Star Game set to be played on Wednesday night at 7:30pm at Johnson Park in New Ulm.
