Five Run First Propels Tigers Over Long Sox

6/23/13

Sunday stood as an important day on the Tigers schedule. They were scheduled to host the leaders of both divisions in the Tomahawk East. The field required some work to get it into playing shape due to recent wet weather, but things were ready to roll for the 3pm contest against Lamberton. Nearly all of the scoring took place in the game's first inning, with Springfield building a 5-1 edge. Each team would add one more run to make the final 6-2.

Alex Frank made the start on the bump for Springfield. The Long Sox made him pay for a leadoff walk. A stolen base, sacrifice bunt, and wild pitch gave Lamberton a 1-0 lead without the aid of a hit.

The bottom of the first began with Brandon Wilhelmi reaching via error. Jacob Menage was hit by a pitch and Alex Fink singled to load the bases. The score was tied on a ground ball by Ryan Sturm in which he reached via the second Lamberton error of the inning. Christian Loomis came through with a two-run double to make the score 3-1. Matt Vogel pushed the lead to three with an RBI base hit. Springfield got their fifth run of the inning on a first and third double steal.

Springfield had an opportunity to increase their lead in the bottom of the second, but stranded a pair in scoring position. The Long Sox lifted starter Johnny Pistulka after just two innings. Next out of the chute was Dylan Bunting. Bunting was able to tip-toe through the next three innings, allowing just one run, while leaving seven Tiger baserunners on the sacks.

Meanwhile, Frank put up zeros to keep the score at 6-1 until the top of the seventh. Lamberton kept battling in the later innings of the ballgame. After the first two batters were retired, the Long Sox loaded the bases in the fifth. In the seventh, they put together three straight hits to drive across their second run. The eighth saw yet another two-out rally with Frank stranding two baserunners.

Lamberton's bullpen faced in the minimum in the final three frames. Seth Guetter worked the sixth and seventh and Blake Altermatt hurled the bottom of the eighth. Frank finished the job with a strong three-up, three-down ninth to seal the 6-2 victory.

Alex Fink had another big day at the plate, going three-for-four. Brandon Wilhelmi, Jacob Menage, Christian Loomis, Matt Vogel, Zach Bisel, and Cooper Scheffler all contributed one hit each to the Tiger attack. For the Long Sox Mike Wotschke and Colby Pack had a pair of hits each. Alex Frank improved his record to 3-0 with the complete game win, allowing two earned runs on seven hits and racking up six strikeouts. Johnny Pistulka was the loser, going just two innings, allowing five runs, only two earned, on four hits with four strikeouts.

The win moves the Tigers to 8-4 in league play and 10-6 overall on the season. With the first game of the day wrapping up around five, Springfield had a bit of time before their battle with the Brewers, set to begin at 7:30pm.

NOTES: The win was Springfield's first in their new red jerseys, making them 1-2 in their new tops...The Tigers have played very well in day games this season. The win moved their record to 7-2 when no lights are needed...While Springfield has not won a game in Lamberton since 2006, the Tigers have won four of their last six against the Long Sox at Riverside Park.
