Skovbroten Blanks Tigers

6/7/13

Springfield returned to Tomahawk East League play on Friday night with a trip to Leavenworth. Sloppy defense put the Tigers in a 3-0 hole and the Orioles added four more runs for a 7-0 win.

Leavenworth sent Derek Skovbroten to the mound. In the first, he gave up a single to Max Salazar, but worked his way out of the inning without any trouble. Little did Springfield know, but that would be the story of the night. Skovbroten kept the Tigers off balance and never faced more than four batters in any inning.

Christian Loomis took the hill for the visitors. In the bottom of the first, he was able to wiggle out of a bases-loaded jam with a double-play ball.

The Springfield defense struggled in the second. This time Loomis wasn't able to keep the Orioles off the board. Two errors and a walk loaded the bases. A wild pitch started the scoring for Leavenworth. After getting the second out, John Cook came through with a two-out, two-run single to make the score 3-0.

The defense showed up starting in the third and helped Loomis face just three batters in the third through fifth innings. The top of the sixth saw the Tigers get a runner to second base. That would be the furthest any Tiger would advance during the game with the score remaining 3-0.

A one-out single from Billy Cook and a walk to Brian Schwartz put two on for Leavenworth in the home half of the sixth. Skovbroten took out an insurance policy for himself when he slugged a three-run home run over the left field fence to give his team a 6-0 lead.

Matt Vogel took over the mound duties in the bottom of the seventh. Leavenworth got their final run on a bases loaded walk. Alex Frank tossed a one, two, three tune-up inning in the bottom of the eighth. Skovbroten gave up singles in each of the final two frames, but no more, as he cruised to the 7-0 win.

Max Salazar, Alex Fink, and Marty Brandl all singled to make up the entire Tiger offensive output. John Cook led Leavenworth with two hits and two runs batted in. Derek Skovbroten helped himself with the homer and four RBIs on the night. Skovbroten earned the complete game shutout victory, allowing just three hits, while striking out nine. Christian Loomis took the loss, working six innings, surrendering six runs, three earned, on six hits, with three strikeouts and three walks.

The loss drops Springfield to 8-3 overall on the year and 6-1 in the Tomahawk East. They'll look to return to their winning ways when they travel to St. James on Sunday for a 5:05 start. The game will be broadcast on KNUJ 860 radio, so if you can't make it over, tune in your radio or check out the web stream as the Tigers battle the A's. See you at the ballpark!

NOTES: The Tigers have not won a game in Leavenworth since 2007. They are 0-6 since then, including a playoff loss in 2011...Christian Loomis has been victimized by his defense when he's taken the hill this season. Opponents have scored 16 times when he's been on the mound, but 11 of those runs have been unearned...The Springfield High School team finished as the runner-up in the Section 3A playoffs with a 1-0 loss to Windom on Thursday night in Marshall. The Tigers look forward to contributions from a number of talented players from that squad on the townteam this summer and in future seasons!
