Nisswa Smokes Springfield

6/1/13

Nisswa apparently saved all their offense for the day for their match-up against Springfield. They lost their tournament opener to Isanti 15-0 in five innings. In the three o'clock game, they were the ones who scored fifteen times, dropping the Tigers 15-4.

Righthander Brett Jenkins took the ball for the Lightning. The Tigers countered with Alex Fink, who made his first mound appearance since the summer of 2011. After a one, two, three top of the first, Nisswa put their hitting shoes on, getting a double, single, and a sac fly to get on the board. A pair of Springfield errors put them up 2-0.

The Tigers cut the lead in half in their next at-bat. Matt Vogel drew a two-out walk and Marc Salazar followed by ripping a double to drive in Vogel, making the score 2-1.

The bottom of the second saw the Lightning continue to hit the ball hard. They put together three hits and took advantage of a hit batter and Tiger error to make the score 6-1.

Vogel took over the mound duties to start the bottom of the third. He worked around a pair of Springfield errors to match the zero posted by Jenkins in the top of the inning. It was the only scoreless inning of the game.

Nisswa's Achilles from their loss in the first game popped up in the fourth. Fink won an eight-pitch at-bat with a lead-off single. Then the Lightning started throwing the ball around to the tune of four errors and three Springfield runs to get the Tigers within two, 6-4.

The Lightning three hitter, Aaron Jenkins, sent a message on the first pitch of the bottom of the fourth. He crushed a ball that could have been contained by no park, except maybe Yellowstone, to make the score 7-4.

Springfield stranded runners at second and third in the top of the fifth, but were unable to cut into the Nisswa lead. Vogel ran out of gas in the bottom of the inning, loading the bases on a single, walk, and hit batter. Aaron Jenkins emptied the sacks with a double. Two more hit batters repacked the bases. A base hit ended Vogel's afternoon. The Tigers went to Derek Krebs to hurl. A pair of wild pitches gave Nisswa a 13-4 lead. Finally, Dave Berndgen ended the game via the ten-run rule when he dropped a two-run bomb to make the final, 15-4.

Alex Fink accounted for two-thirds of the Tigers' three hits. Marc Salazar added the only other Springfield knock with his RBI double. Aaron Jenkins had a ridiculous day at the plate for the Lightning, going four-for-four with two doubles, a homer, and six RBIs. Brett Jenkins earned the win, going all five innings, allowing four runs, one earned, on three hits, with five strikeouts. Fink took the loss on the mound, giving up six runs, four earned, on five hits with three strikeouts in two innings of work.

The loss put Springfield into a familiar place, the seventh place game of the tournament on Sunday morning at 11am. A loss would mean the Tigers' fourth last place finish in six tournament appearances.

NOTES: Aaron Jenkins' home run in the bottom of the fourth takes the place of the monster home run served up by Chris Sturm in the 2008 tournament as probably the longest homer witnessed by those in attendance. The ball may still have been going up as it cleared the trees beyond the left field fence...Alex Fink was the only one of the three Tiger pitchers in the ballgame to not give up a homer...Springfield fans received the good news that the high school baseball team won as this contest wrapped up. SHS defeated MACCRAY 10-0 in six innings. They will now take on Lac qui Parle Valley in a rematch of the 2-1 loss that dropped the Tigers into the losers' bracket. The game is scheduled for 5pm on Tuesday, 6/4 in Marshall.
