Vogel & Salazar Combine for Second Straight Shutout

5/27/13

For the third time in less than twenty-four hours, Springfield hit the field. This time on Monday in Gibbon for a 2pm Memorial Day battle. Patriotism was out in full effect with flags surrounding the field and veterans taking part in the ballgame. Matt Vogel and Mike Salazar combined to keep the Reds off the scoreboard. Meanwhile, Christian Loomis had a big day with three runs batted in, including a two-run homer, leading Springfield to a 4-0 win.

Shane Ahlbrecht made the start on the mound for Gibbon. He kept the Tigers at bay until the top of the fourth. With two down, Ryan Sturm singled. A wild pitch moved him into scoring position. Loomis put Springfield on the board with a base hit.

Vogel was solid on the hill, never letting the Reds gain traction on a rally. He never faced more than four batters in any of his six innings. Potential rallies were stomped with the help of a pair of picked off runners and the arm of Jordan Milbrath throwing out a pair of runners from center field.

Sturm and Loomis again teamed up in the top of the sixth. After Sturm got on base with a single, Loomis put the ball over the left field fence near the foul pole for a two-run home run. A Gibbon error put Milbrath on the sacks and Vogel helped himself by driving in Springfield's fourth run of the day.

The three-run sixth meant the end of the line for Ahlbrecht and Gibbon turned to San Van Hon. Van Hon allowed a couple hits, including a double off the left-center field wall from Max Salazar, but did not allow any further damage during the final three Springfield at bats.

Springfield also went to the bullpen after six, bringing on Mike Salazar. A walk and a hit put the shutout in jeopardy in the home half of the seventh, but Salazar was able to get a couple ground balls to get out of the jam. A one-out single was all that Gibbon could muster in the final two innings as Salazar pinned down the 4-0 victory.

Ryan Sturm, Christian Loomis, and Matt Vogel led the Tiger bats with two hits each. Brandon Wilhelmi, Max Salazar, and Jordan Milbrath added one hit each. Jon DeRock had two hits to lead the Reds. Matt Vogel earned the win, working six scoreless innings, allowing just three hits, with three strikeouts, but four walks. Shane Ahlbrecht took the loss, also working six innings, surrendering four runs, three earned, on seven hits. Mike Salazar picked up a three-inning save, working three scoreless, allowing just two hits.

The Tigers improve to 7-0 overall and 6-0 in Tomahawk East League play on the year. They'll now take a break from league play to head to the Omann Insurance Invitational Tournament in St. Stephen and Sartell on Saturday and Sunday, June 1 and 2. They'll open tournament play by taking on host St. Stephen in St. Stephen at 10am on Saturday. Go Tigers!

NOTES: Gibbon's McGowan Field always has a great baseball atmosphere. This year's enhancements at "The Mac" include a new inning-by-inning electronic scoreboard, new sod, and a painting of baseball playing Hardware Hank on the white building beyond the right-center field fence...Springfield has not trailed in a game since they fell behind 2-1 in the bottom of the first in Essig...The Tigers enter the Omann Insurance Invitational for the sixth year with an overall record of 3-12 in the tournament.
