Loomis & Milbrath Combine to Shut Out Longhorns

5/26/13

After pulling out a 5-4 win in Sleepy Eye earlier in the afternoon, Springfield headed to Stark for a 7:30pm contest. Solid pitching was on display for both clubs as the game's hurlers combined to allow just seven hits. All of the game's scoring came in the top of the fifth when the Tigers scored three times, en route to a 3-0 win.

Stark sent left-hander Adam Sellner to the mound. Springfield manager Steve Helget handed the ball to Christian Loomis for his first start of the season.

The Longhorns' best threat came in the bottom of the fourth when they got two on with one out, but Loomis coaxed a pair of ground balls to keep them off the scoreboard.

Marc Salazar drew a four-pitch walk to start the top of the fifth. Zach Bisel followed with a single. Brandon Wilhelmi reached on an error when he laid down a sacrifice bunt. Jacob Menage and Ryan Sturm sent sacrifice flies into the air to drive in two Tiger runs. Another Stark miscue allowed Wilhelmi to score Springfield's third run.

Loomis worked scoreless innings through the seventh. The Tigers got runners into scoring position in each of the final three innings, but were unable to pick up any additional runs. Jordan Milbrath came on in the bottom of the eighth and worked the final two frames, facing just one batter over the minimum, making the final 3-0.

Springfield had just three hits in the game. One each by Jacob Menage, Alex Fink, and Zach Bisel. Tim Seifert led the way for the Longhorns collecting two of their four hits, with Joey Wahl and Adam Sellner adding one each. Christian Loomis earned the win, working seven scoreless innings, allowing four hits, while striking out six. Sellner went the distance on the mound for the home team, taking the loss, giving up three runs, one earned, on three hits with eleven strikeouts. Jordan Milbrath picked up his second save of the day, working the final two innings and striking out five.

The victory gives the Tigers a 6-0 overall record and 5-0 record in league play. They'll wrap up a busy 24 hours of baseball when they head to Gibbon for a Memorial Day matinee with the Reds, starting at 2pm.

NOTES: Christian Loomis has thrown eleven consecutive scoreless innings in his last two appearances at the Stark Ballpark...The 3-0 shutout by the Tiger hurlers was the second 3-0 win in the last three games...The current rainy stretch has the Stark outfield very green and the ballpark looking very sharp.
