Big Inning Gives Springfield Victory

7/1/12

On Sunday night Springfield traveled to St. James to play a game which had been rained out on June 10th. Both teams sent a crafty veteran to the mound. Though there were some hard hit balls, they showed that pitching is all about hitting spots and changing speeds. The starters combined to allow just three earned runs in fourteen innings with no free passes. After the teams exchanged unearned runs, the Tigers scored three times in the sixth on their way to a 5-2 win.

St. James sent David Krause to the mound. He did not allow a Springfield base runner until the top of the fourth, retiring the first ten Tiger hitters.

Matt Tews made his second start of the season on the bump. Joe Krause had his number going three-for-three with a pair of doubles, but the only other hit the A's were able to get off of Tews was an infield single during his six innings of work.

In the bottom of the third, a Springfield error gave St. James a base runner. Joe Krause's second two-bagger of the game drove in the first run for the A's.

Tews helped himself when he singled to start things in the top of the fifth. A hit batter and a fly out moved Tews around to third. With two outs, a St. James error extended the inning and allowed Tews to score the tying run.

After one out was recorded in the top of the sixth, Alex Fink launched a double. Ryan Sturm put Springfield on top with an RBI base hit. Tews followed with a double of his own. A one-hopper off the 305 sign in the left field corner. Adam Schmid continued the hit parade with a single, pushing across Sturm. Marc Salazar drove in Springfield's third run of the inning with the Tigers' fifth straight hit.

Left-hander David Krause settled back in to keep the Tigers off the board in the seventh and eighth innings. Manager Helget turned to Matt Vogel to toe the rubber in the bottom of the seventh. Vogel showed the effects of a long hot day at the ballpark and wasn't his usual self. Even so, he kept the A's from scoring in his first two innings of work.

Chris Menssen relieved Krause in the ninth. The Tigers were able to take advantage of a pair of hits, along with a St. James miscue to plate an insurance run.

Vogel gave up two hits and a walk to load the bases in the bottom of the ninth. A bases loaded free pass made the score 5-2 and put the tying run at first base. Jason Nachreiner came on to slam the door, retiring the three and four hitters in the A's lineup to pick up a save and secure the Springfield victory.

The middle of the Springfield order led the way with Ryan Sturm going three-for-five. Alex Fink and Matt Tews each had two hits. Adam Schmid and Marc Salazar rounded out the Tiger offense with one hit each. Joe Krause had three of St. James' seven hits with two doubles and two runs-batted-in. Tews improved his record to 2-0 with the win, working six innings and allowing just one unearned run on four hits. David Krause took the loss for the A's, going eight innings, giving up four runs, three earned, on seven hits with three strikeouts. Jason Nachreiner earned his first save of the season, recording the final two outs with one strikeout.

The win improves the Tigers' record to 8-7 in Tomahawk East League play and 8-11 overall in 2012. Springfield will enjoy a week off for the July 4th holiday and return to action in one week when they host Redwood Falls on Sunday night. Sunday night will also mark the annual "Youth Night" at Riverside Park. All youth 14 and under will receive a free hot dog. Between innings there will be games, drawings for prizes, and much more! We hope to see you there!

NOTES: Alex Fink started at third base and then moved over to shortstop for the National Division All-Stars in the Tomahawk East League All-Star game in Stark on Friday night. He went one-for-four, scoring two runs and driving in one, as the American Division won the game 16-10...Jake Miesen, who had not appeared in a game since early June of last season, was in attendance to make appearances in Sunday's ballgames to count toward his required four games in order to be eligible for postseason play. Miesen is rehabing from an arm injury and hopes to contribute as the Tigers move toward and enter the playoffs...The Tigers have gone three-up, three-down in the third inning of their last five games...Opposing pitchers, Andrew Woitas and David Krause, retired the first ten Springfield batters in each game on Sunday.
