Tigers Team Up to Defeat Redbirds

6/13/12

After a rainout on Sunday night at St. James and some showers earlier in the day, one certainly couldn't complain about the weather when Springfield traveled to Redwood Falls on Wednesday night. It was a perfect night for a ballgame. The Tigers combined a superb pitching performance from Alex Frank, along with some key hits to defeat the Redbirds 5-2.

Redwood Falls sent former Tiger, Jesse Berg, to the mound. The Tigers were able to put together a pair of two-out hits from Alex Fink and Ryan Sturm in the top of the first to jump out to a 1-0 lead.

Alex Frank took the ball for the visitors. He had his pitches working and held the Redbirds without a hit for the first seven innings of the contest. A Springfield error and two walks were the source of the three base runners for the home squad during the first seven innings.

Berg countered with zeros until the top of the fifth. Marty Brandl hit a one-out single just inside the bag down the first base line. Zach Bisel followed with a base hit of his own. A Redbird error loaded the bases before Fink came through with a sacrifice fly to score Brandl and put Springfield up 2-0.

Fink continued his hot hitting in the top of the seventh when he crushed a double to deep center field. The two-bagger scored Bisel and Matt Vogel to put Springfield up by four. The Tigers picked up an insurance run in the eighth when Brandl laid down a squeeze bunt to score Marc Salazar, making the score 5-0.

Frank ran into a bump in the bottom of the eighth when the Redbirds got their first hit of the game. After the second out of the inning was recorded, they proceeded to put together three straight hits, including a run-scoring single by Logan Swann and an RBI double by Travis Fluck.

With the score 5-2, Redwood Falls went to the bullpen to bring on left-hander Brady Bierl who worked a scoreless top of the ninth. Frank made things interesting in the bottom of the ninth as he surrendered a base hit and walked a batter. However, he was able to get out of the inning without any damage, giving Springfield a three-run road victory.

Alex Fink had a huge night at the plate, going three-for-three with three RBIs. Zach Bisel and Marty Brandl added two knocks each to the Tiger attack. While Ryan Sturm and Marc Salazar rounded out the offense with one hit apiece. No Redbird had more than one hit on the night. Alex Frank earned a complete game victory, improving his record to 1-4 on the year. Frank allowed two runs on five hits with nine strikeouts. Jesse Berg took the loss for the Redbirds, going eight innings, allowing five runs, two earned, on nine hits with four punchouts.

The victory is Springfield's second straight and improves their record to 3-4 in league play and 3-8 overall on the season. The Tigers are hoping for weather suitable to play two on Sunday for their scheduled doubleheader. First, they'll head to Gibbon to take on the Reds and then they'll travel to Searles for the nightcap. Come travel with the Tigers on Sunday as they look to continue playing quality baseball!
