Bases Busy as Orioles Defeat Tigers

6/6/12

Springfield returned to Tomahawk East League play on Wednesday night when they traveled to Leavenworth for an 8:00pm matchup with the Orioles. There were a plethora of baserunners in the ballgame, as the teams combined to leave twenty-five runners on the sacks, including the bases loaded five times. Eighteen free passes contributed to the high level of traffic on the base paths. Leavenworth was better able to take advantage of their opportunities, coming out on top, 7-5.

A pair of two-out errors by the Orioles started a rally for Springfield in the top of the first. Christian Loomis came through with an RBI base hit to put the Tigers up 1-0.

In the top of the second, Leavenworth hurler Dale McMullen had a tough time finding the strike zone. Thus the Tigers extended their lead with Alex Fink and Ryan Sturm drawing bases loaded walks to make the score 3-0.

Max Salazar made his first appearance on the mound when he took the ball as the Springfield starter. He kept the Orioles scoreless until they put together a pair of hits in the bottom of the third to cut the Tiger lead to two.

In the home half of the fourth, Salazar had his bout with tracking down the strike zone. A walk, a Tiger error, and a single loaded the bases with one out. Salazar got a strikeout for the second out, but couldn't get the third. After three straight bases loaded walks, Jacob Menage was called upon to make his amateur mound debut. He coaxed a foul pop up to the catcher to end the rally with the Orioles up, 4-3.

Springfield took advantage of a Leavenworth miscue in the top of the fifth to knot the game at four. Menage started the bottom of the fifth with two straight four pitch walks. A sacrifice bunt moved the runners to second and third before McMullen helped himself out with a two-run single. Before they were done, the Orioles added their seventh run of the contest, making it 7-4.

Again, the Tigers fought back in the next half-inning. Fink drew a walk and ultimately came in to score on a wild pitch to get the Tigers within two. Leavenworth went to the bullpen for Chad Armbruster in the top of the seventh. He faced just one batter over the minimum as he worked the final three frames.

Loomis came on for the Tigers after Menage faced two batters in the bottom of the seventh. He worked out of the jam without any further damage. Later, he added a scoreless eighth inning, en route to a final score of 7-5.

Matt Vogel led the Springfield bats with two hits. Ryan Sturm, Christian Loomis, Marc Salazar, and Ryan Beyer all added one hit each. Dale McMullen and Chad Armbruster led Leavenworth with two hits each. McMullen earned the win on the mound, going six innings, allowing five runs, three earned, on five hits, with five strikeouts and seven walks. Jacob Menage took to loss for the Tigers, working two and one-third innings, allowing three earned runs, on four hits. Armbruster picked up a save for the home team, working the final three innings, allowing one hit, while striking out five.

The loss drops the Tigers' record to 1-4 in league play and 1-8 overall. They will look to get back into the left hand column when they return to Riverside Park on Friday night for an 8 o'clock battle with Stark. See you at the yard!
