Springfield Comes Up Short, Finishes Eighth

6/3/12

After a couple losses on the opening day of the Omann Invitational Tournament, Springfield took on the St. Stephen Steves on Sunday morning. The game was scoreless going into the sixth, when the Steves broke through for three runs, accounting for all the scoring in the game and a 3-0 win.

Mike Salazar made his first start for Springfield and did a great job working around several free passes and errors to keep the Steves off the board. St. Stephen didn't get their first hit until the top of the fourth.

The Tigers had some opportunities, getting two runners on in the second, fourth, sixth, and seventh innings, but the clutch hit never came as St. Stephen pitcher Blake Guggenberger worked his way out of each jam.

The Steves broke the streak of zeros in the top of the sixth when they put together three hits, along with a hit batter to plate three, which would be all they would need.

Zach Bisel led the Springfield offense with two hits. Christian Loomis, Marty Brandl, and Alex Frank each added one hit to the Tiger total. Trent Phelps led the Steves with two hits. Blake Guggenberger picked up the win, working six shutout innings, allowing three hits, while striking out eight. Mike Salazar took the tough loss, going all seven innings, allowing three runs, two earned, on just five hits, with five strikeouts. Austin Guggenberger picked up a save, working the bottom of the seventh for the Steves.

The loss gives Springfield an eighth place finish in the tournament. However, they should feel good about a couple a really good ballgames to bookend their tournament performance. They played the entire tournament with manager Steve Helget serving as the only potential substitute during the games. The Tigers are now 1-7 on the season. They'll return to Tomahawk East League play on Wednesday night when they travel to Leavenworth to take on the Orioles. Come cheer on the Tigers!
