Muskies Thrash Tigers

A tough loss in the opening round of the 2012 Omann Insurance Invitational put Springfield in the losers' bracket against the tournament co-host Sartell Muskies. The let down of the loss in the first game seemed to carry over to the second game of the day. The Muskies had their way with a flat Tiger team, 11-1, in a game shortened to six innings by the ten-run rule.
Sartell helped Springfield get on the board in the top of the first when Max Salazar moved around the bases via a pair of Muskie miscues. Christian Loomis notched an RBI with a base hit to drive in Salazar, putting Springfield on top, 1-0.
Loomis took the ball for the Tigers and had a tough outing. The Muskies didn't trail for long, as they put together six hits in the bottom of the first to plate five runs.
The top of the second saw the Muskies try to help Springfield back into the game with another couple of errors, but the Tigers didn't take advantage, stranding a pair of runners without cutting into the Sartell lead.
Springfield's defense had some trouble in the bottom of the third when a pair of errors, along with three additional hits made the score 8-1. Muskie starter Adam Wenker didn't allow a hit after a lead-off infield single by Max Salazar in the top of the third.
After a solid three up, three down bottom of the fourth by Loomis, Sartell pushed across two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to extend their lead to nine runs. Ryan Sturm took over on the bump in the bottom of the sixth. With three hits, the Muskies plated their eleventh run, ending the scheduled seven inning contest via the ten-run rule.
Max Salazar and Christian Loomis had the Tigers' only two hits in the game. Everyone in the Sartell lineup had at least one knock on the day. Adam Wenker earned the victory, working all six innings for Sartell, giving up just one unearned run on two hits, while striking out seven. Loomis was the loser for Springfield, allowing seven earned runs in five innings of work.
The Tigers' second loss put them in the seventh place game against the tournament's other co-host St. Stephen in St. Stephen at 11am on Sunday morning.
