No Luck For the Tigers Against the Irish

5/18/12

Springfield hosted the Milroy Irish in an exhibition contest on Friday night at Riverside Park. It was a long night of big innings, miscues, lead changes, and extra base hits. The teams combined for fifteen runs in the first two innings on their way to a 16-13 ten inning win for Milroy.

Christian Loomis took the bump for the Tigers. He got roughed up in the top of the first as the Irish put five runs on the board before Springfield had a chance to bat. A highlight of the inning was a two-run homer off the bat of Isaac Dolan that rattled the football bleachers in left-center field.

The Irish increased their lead to 7-0 with two more unearned runs in the second inning. Milroy countered with Dan Frank on the mound and the Tigers got to him in the bottom of the second when they batted twelve and scored eight runs. Patience was key for the home team as they drew six walks on their way to taking a 8-7 lead.

Milroy tied the game with another unearned run in the top of the fourth and took the lead with a single run in the fifth.

Mike Salazar made his Springfield amateur debut on the mound when he took over for Loomis in the top of the sixth. The Tigers gave Salazar a 10-9 lead in the bottom of the inning, with clutch doubles from Marc Salazar and Ryan Sturm.

The Irish pushed across three runs in the seventh, keyed by back-to-back doubles from Derek Riley and Tyler Peterson, making the tally 12-10.

The Tigers clawed their way back with single runs in the bottom of the seventh and eighth to tie the game at twelve. Alex Frank took over the mound duties and faced just three batters in the top of the ninth.

In the bottom of the ninth, Brent Haseleu started things with a double, but the Tigers were unable to move him around to score the winning run. In the top of the tenth, poor defense contributed to the Irish scoring four unearned runs to go up 16-12. Springfield took advantage of a Milroy error to get one run in the bottom of the tenth, but that would be all as Cody Mather wrapped up the win for the Irish.

Ryan Sturm continued his hot hitting with three doubles to pace the Tiger bats. Marc Salazar and Jordan Milbrath added two hits each. While Zach Bisel, Christian Loomis, Brent Haseleu, and Danny Christensen rounded out the home team's offense with one hit apiece. Dominic Dolan and Derek Riley led Milroy with four and three hits respectively. Dan Frank, Luke Walling, and Cody Mather took care of the mound duties for Milroy with Mather picking up the win. Alex Frank took the loss for Springfield, working the final two innings.

The loss drops the Tigers to 1-2 overall on the year. They'll return to league play on Sunday night when they host St. James in a 7:30 contest. See you at the yard!
