Eight Run Sixth Propels Tigers Over Bluejays

5/13/12

It was perfect baseball weather as Springfield traveled to Essig for their traditional Mother's Day contest on Sunday afternoon. The score was knotted at one apiece going into the sixth, before the Tigers batted fourteen to plate eight runs en route to a 9-2 victory.

Bryant Krebs returned to the mound for the first time since the middle of the 2011 season when he sustained an arm injury. Krebs hit Jason Schmitz to start the bottom of the first. After a pair of stolen bases and a ground ball, Essig took a 1-0 lead.

The Bluejays gave the ball to Eric Scheibel. He worked around a single base runner in the first and second, before an error coupled with hits by Zach Bisel and Jacob Menage, gave Springfield their first run of the day.

After three no-hit innings, manager Steve Helget turned the pitching duties over to Jason Nachreiner. Nachreiner and Scheibel exchanged zeros in the fourth and fifth innings.

In the top of the sixth, the Tigers put on their hitting shoes, knocking Scheibel out of the game with three straight hits from Marc Salazar, Ryan Sturm, and Matt Vogel. Vogel's single put the Tigers up 2-1. Dave Krzmarzick came on in relief for Essig. An error on a sacrifice bunt loaded the bases. Christian Loomis was then hit by a pitch to push across Springfield's third run. Danny Christensen worked a one-out walk to make the score 4-1. Bisel ripped an RBI base hit before the Bluejays exchanged Krzmarzicks on the mound with Kyle taking over. Kyle Krzmarzick was unable to record an out as Menage, Salazar, and Sturm all singled. Essig was forced to go to the bullpen again as Dusty Fleck came on in relief and recorded the final two outs of the inning.

Essig answered Springfield's big sixth with three hits and a run to make the score 9-2. Fleck allowed just one hit during the final three innings. The Tigers went to Alex Frank in the seventh who worked a perfect final three frames for the visitors.

Ryan Sturm led the Springfield bats with three hits. Zach Bisel, Jacob Menage, and Marc Salazar added two hits each. Matt Vogel, Marty Brandl, and Christian Loomis each contributed a single to the Tiger attack. Mitch Stueber led Essig at the plate stroking two of their four hits. On the mound, Jason Nachreiner earned the win, pitching the middle three innings, allowing one earned run on four hits, while striking out two. Eric Scheibel took the loss for the home team, working five plus innings, allowing four runs, three earned, on seven hits, with two strikeouts. Alex Frank picked up a three inning save, striking out three during his nine-up, nine-down three innings.

The win evens the Tigers' record at 1-1 on the year. Next up, they'll play host to the Milroy Irish in an exhibition match-up on Friday night at Riverside Park. Springfield continues Tomahawk East League play next Sunday, when they host the St. James A's for a 7:30pm tilt. Come on down and cheer on the Tigers!
