Tigers Finish Eighth in Omann Insurance Invitational Tournament

6/5/11

With two late-inning losses, Springfield found themselves in the seventh place game of the Omann Insurance Invitational. This game saw the two teams without a win in the tournament, Winsted and Springfield compete in an 11am start in Sartell. Winsted took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third and didn't look back, cruising to a 7-4 victory.

Bryant Krebs took the hill for Springfield and worked two scoreless innings to start the game. The Tigers were first to score in the bottom of the second when Matt Baier reached on an infield single. Baier stole second and he moved to third when Zach Bisel reached on a Wildcat error. Marc Salazar then drove a fly ball to deep left field, allowing Baier to tag and score the game's first run.

An inconsistent strike zone contributed to three walks by Krebs in the third, that along with a base hit, allowed Winsted to score twice and take a 2-1 lead. In the top of the fourth, the Wildcat bats went to work getting four hits, including a bases clearing double to plate three runs and push their lead to four, 5-1.

Brady Schwab began the home half of the fourth by drawing a walk. A pair of wild pitches allowed him to move around to third base before Matt Baier launched the Tiger's second sac fly of the day to climb back within three.

Christian Loomis came on in relief in the fifth inning and retired the wildcats in order. Ken Sather began the bottom of the fifth with a single. Alex Fink drove him in with a double to the left-center field gap to make the score 5-3.

Loomis worked out of a jam without allowing a run in the sixth. The Wildcats went to the bullpen for Mychal Penaz in the bottom of the sixth. He retired the side in order. A lead-off double in the top of the seventh started a two-run rally for Winsted as they pushed their lead back to four, 7-3.

The Tigers got three straight hits to begin the bottom of the seventh from Danny Christensen, Marty Brandl, and an RBI single from Fink to get one run, but the rally stalled, making the final, 7-4.

Alex Fink lead the Springfield attack with two hits. Matt Baier, Danny Christensen, Ken Sather, and Marty Brandl all added a hit to the Tiger tally. Jake Prehn earned the win for Winsted, giving up three runs on three hits, while striking out six in five innings of work. Bryant Krebs took the loss for Springfield, going four innings and allowing five runs on seven hits. Mychal Penaz picked up a save for the Wildcats, working the final two innings and allowing one run.

The loss drops the Tigers to 5-6 overall on the season. They return to Tomahawk East League play on Wednesday night when they travel to Searles for the first-ever night game under the new lights. Come on over and cheer on the Tigers! See you at the ballpark!
