Tigers Drop a Tough One in Tournament Opener

6/4/11

Springfield traveled up to St. Stephen for their fourth appearance in the Omann Insurance Invitational. They were matched up against Detroit Lakes in the opening round for an 11:30am contest. The Tigers held a 4-1 lead going into the bottom of the seventh, but were only able to get one out before the Angels had scored four times for the walk-off win.

Alex Frank took the ball for the Tigers and pitched a very solid first six innings, scattering six hits and allowing just one unearned run in the fourth.

After stranding runners in scoring position in the first two innings, the Tigers put together a rally in the top of the third. Frank drew a walk to start the inning. Zach Bisel put down a sacrifice bunt to move him up to second. Matt Baier and Alex Fink followed with singles to load the bases. Christian Loomis came through with a two-out single to push across the first two Springfield runs. Jordan Milbrath drove in the Tigers third run when he followed with a base hit of his own.

The Tigers left two more runners on in the fourth and were retired in order in the fifth and sixth innings. Bisel started the top of the seventh with a double and scored on a single by Alex Fink to put Springfield up 4-1.

Frank walked the lead-off batter in the bottom of the seventh, but he was retired on a fielder's choice. After a single and a walk loaded the bases, Manager Helget called on Jason Nachreiner to get the Tigers out of the jam. Nachreiner allowed a bases clearing triple that tied the game. Then the runner from third scored on a wild pitch to end the game, as the Tigers fell, 5-4.

Zach Bisel and Alex Fink led the Springfield offense with two hits each. Matt Baier, Christian Loomis, Jordan Milbrath, and Alex Frank all contributed one hit to the Tiger total. Matt Huberty earned the win for Detroit Lakes, working a complete game, allowing eight hits while striking out five and walking three. Jason Nachreiner was tagged with the tough loss.

The loss meant the Tigers would go right back to work, facing tournament co-host St. Stephen at 2pm.
