Muskie Bats Lead Them To Championship

Springfield traveled to Sartell for a date with the host Muskies in the championship game of the 2010 Omann Insurance Invitational. Sartell came out swinging, jumping out to an early 5-0 lead that was too much for the Tigers to overcome.

Jordan Milbrath was Manager Helget's choice to start Springfield's third game in the tournament. Milbrath got into trouble early, falling behind hitters as Sartell loaded the bases on two hits and a walk. Muskie third baseman, Josh Rathbun, took a Milbrath pitch over the center field fence to give the Muskies a 4-0 lead.

Sartell put together three hits in the top of the second to increase their lead to five. The inning was ended with Springfield cutting down a runner at the plate on a great relay, Matt Baier to Christian Loomis to Zach Bisel.

Milbrath was lifted for Jason Nachreiner in the top of the fourth. Nachreiner surrendered a solo homer in the fourth to give Sartell a 6-0 lead. He did not allow another hit during his final three innings of work.

Muskie pitcher, Travis Weaver, kept the Tigers at bay, scattering three hits during the first six innings. In the bottom of the seventh, Nachreiner and Bryant Krebs started a Springfield rally with back-to-back singles. Brady Schwab smashed a two-out base hit to drive in the Tigers' only run in the ballgame, making the final, 6-1.

Springfield had hits by Brady Schwab, Alex Fink, Christian Loomis, Jason Nachreiner, Chris Sturm, and Bryant Krebs to make up their offense. Jordan Milbrath was tagged with the loss, allowing five runs in three innings. Travis Weaver earned the complete game win for Sartell.

Congratulations to the Sartell Muskies, the 2010 champion of the Omann Insurance Invitational! Springfield's second place finish is their best during their three years participating in the tournament. The tournament games moved the Tigers' overall record to 4-8 on the season. They'll look to carry their excellent defense and improved hitting back into the Tomahawk when they return to league play on Friday night as the St. James A's visit Riverside Park. We'll see you there!
