Springfield Powers Over Howard Lake
The Tiger power surge continued as they faced Howard Lake on Sunday morning in St. Stephen. Though they had just five hits, four of them were for extra bases, including two home runs, en route to a 7-2 victory.
Jake Miesen took the mound for Springfield and did a great job keeping the Orphans off balance. The starters exchanged zeros in the first three innings.
Matt Baier worked a walk to begin the top of the fourth. Bob Fink followed, crushing a no-doubter to left-center field, putting the Tigers on top, 2-0. Howard Lake put together three hits in the bottom of the inning to cut the Springfield lead in half, 2-1. The Tigers' second double-play of three in the game got them out of the inning with the lead.
With two-out in the top of the fifth, Alex Fink drew a four pitch walk and Baier hit his second homer of the tournament to make the score 4-1. In the sixth, Chris Sturm was hit by a pitch and moved to third when Marc Salazar hit a two-bagger. Sturm scored on a wild pitch, to increase the lead to four.
Baier singled in the seventh. Christian Loomis was hit by a pitch and Jordan Milbrath walked to load the bases with two outs. This time it was Alex Frank coming through with a two-out, two-run double to push the tally to 7-1.
Miesen allowed a solo homer to right in the bottom of the seventh. Then he retired the next three batters to wrap up Springfield's second straight win.
Matt Baier paced the Springfield attack with two hits. Bob Fink, Alex Frank, and Marc Salazar added one hit each to the total. Jake Miesen worked a solid seven innings to earn the win. Ben Borrell was tagged with the loss for Howard Lake.
The win put Springfield into the championship game against the Sartell Muskies in Sartell at 1:30pm.
