Tigers Crush Bay City

6/5/10

The Springfield offense broke out in the opening round of the 2010 Omann Insurance Invitational. Eight of nine Tiger starters had hits as Springfield clubbed a season-high thirteen hits in a 10-3 win over Bay City.

Jesse Berg took the hill in his first start of the season, after stranding a runner at third in the top of the first, the Tiger bats went to work in the bottom of the inning. Brady Schwab started things with a base hit, but was thrown out attempting to steal second. Alex Fink ripped a one-out double. After the second out of the inning, Bob Fink got the Tigers on the board with a solid single. Christian Loomis reached on an error and Jordan Milbrath walked to load the bases. Chris Sturm deposited the first pitch he saw over the left field fence for a grand slam. Sturm's homer put to bed a home run he gave up in the 2008 tournament and gave Springfield a 5-0 lead.

Rains came in the top of the second and delayed the game for approximately 2.5 hours. Berg retired the Bombers in order in the top of the second. Schwab started things in the bottom of the inning with a base hit. After one was out, Matt Baier took the Bay City starter deep to push the Springfield lead to seven.

Berg struggled a bit with his control in the third, allowing a lead-off walk and three hits as the Bombers pulled within five. Bay City loaded the bases with walks in the fourth, but Berg worked his way out of the inning without allowing a run.

The Bombers got a base on balls to start the top of the fifth and the runner came around to score on a two-out single, making the score 7-3. Loomis got on with a one-out single and Milbrath crushed a two-run home run, half-way up a tree behind the left field fence in the bottom of the fifth.

The Tigers added one more run in the bottom of the sixth to push their lead to seven. Berg retired Bay City in order in the final two innings to secure the 10-3 win.

Brady Schwab led the Springfield offense with three hits. Matt Baier, Christian Loomis, and Chris Sturm contributed two hits each. While Alex Fink, Bob Fink, Jordan Milbrath, and Ken Sather added one hit apiece. Jesse Berg earned the complete game win, allowing three runs, while striking out five. Eric Lange went the distance for Bay City in the losing effort.

With dark clouds and rain in the air, the second game of the day was postponed until Sunday morning at 10am when the Tigers would face Howard Lake in St. Stephen.
