Tigers Lose A Tough One in Essig
Baseball fans couldn't have asked for much more on Sunday afternoon in Essig: a sunny day, excellent pitching performances for both teams, and a quick two hour game time. Unfortunately for the vistors, they weren't able to plate a single run as the Bluejays came out on top, 2-0.
Dusty Fleck made the start on the mound for the Bluejays. He allowed just one hit and only two Springfield runners made it into scoring position during his six innings of work.
Tiger starter Jake Miesen exchanged zeros with Fleck for the first four innings, as he did not allow a base runner until the bottom of the fourth. In the home half of the fifth, a lead off double by Ty Sellner, coupled with a Tiger error gave Essig a 1-0 lead.
Miesen surrendered back-to-back singles to start the bottom of the sixth as Essig added a run to push their lead to two. Sam Hansen took over on the mound in the top of the seventh. Springfield loaded the bases on base hits by Matt Tews and Marty Brandl, along with a walk by Ken Sather. Hansen worked his way out of the inning and faced the minimum the rest of the way.
The Tigers were held to just three hits on the day, singles by Marc Salazar, Matt Tews, and Marty Brandl. Jake Miesen took the tough loss, going eight innings, allowing just one earned run on five hits while striking out five. Dusty Fleck was the winner for Essig with Sam Hansen picking up a save.
With the loss, Springfield falls to 0-2 in the Tomahawk East and 1-3 overall. They'll continue on the road on Friday night with a trip to St. James to take on the A's. Come on over to cheer on the Tigers as they look to put one in the win column and break their three game slide.
