Yankees Spoil Home Opener
5/15/10
Springfield made their 2010 debut at Riverside Park on Saturday night against the Milroy Yankees. The ballpark was looking great with the new advertising signs on the outfield fence and other improvements for the new year. The Tigers jumped out to an early lead, but Milroy's relentless attack left them on the short end of an 18-4 score.
Alex Frank took the ball for Springfield and retired Milroy in order in the top of the first. In the bottom of the inning, Matt Baier was hit by a pitch. A sacrifice bunt by Jason Nachreiner moved him up before the Tigers took advantage of a Yankee error to take a 1-0 lead.
Frank ran into some trouble in the top of the third when the Yankees took advantage of Springfield miscues to score three runs on one hit. Milroy pushed their lead to five in the fourth, scoring three unearned runs.
The Tigers cut into the Yankee lead in their half of the fourth when pinch hitter Al Wilhelmi worked a two-out walk. Marty Brandl followed with an infield single. Ken Sather drove in Wilhelmi with a base hit to left. Alex Frank loaded the bases with a single. Baier picked up an RBI with a base hit, scoring Brandl, but Sather was thrown out at the plate to end the inning.
Milroy led 6-3 going into the fifth, before they put up five runs in the inning to push the game out of reach, 11-3. The Tigers picked up a run in the bottom of the fifth to get within seven. Milroy continued to score runs, getting two in the seventh and five in the eighth to make the final 18-4.
Marty Brandl had two hits for the home team. Matt Baier, Jason Nachreiner, Ken Sather and Alex Frank all added singles to the Tiger total. Frank took the loss going the first four innings while giving up just three hits. For Milroy, Anthony Rohlik earned the win. Matt Bauer led the Yankee bats going 4-for-4 with two doubles and two triples. Springfield will get right back on the field with a 2pm matchup against the Essig Bluejays on Sunday.
