Wilhelmi Throws a Gem, as Springfield Downs Brewers

6/29/08

The New Ulm Brewers came to town in what turned out to be the finale of the activities for Springfield's Riverside Days celebration. The game was originally scheduled for Saturday night, but had to be pushed back to Sunday night due to rain. The rain also put a damper on the 1990s Tournament Team Reunion Night, though a number of players from the 1992-1998 Springfield state tournament teams were in town Saturday night and got together for reminiscing in spite of the rain.

Brandon Wilhelmi took the ball for the Tigers and was flat-out fantastic. He faced just two batters over the minimum, allowing a single in the first and seventh innings for the only Brewer base runners, during his complete game effort.

Springfield got on the board in the bottom of the second. Adam Beers and Bryant Krebs got back-to-back singles. Beers came in to score on a New Ulm error, giving Springfield a 1-0 lead.

Beers got things going again in the Tiger fourth when he smashed a leadoff double. Krebs was hit by a pitch and Marty Brandl moved the runners up with a sacrifice bunt. Two wild pitches brought in both Beers and Krebs, extending the Springfield lead to three.

In the fifth, New Ulm helped out the home team with two errors to start the inning. Beers drove in the Tigers' fourth run with his third hit of the game. Krebs grounded out driving in another Tiger run. Brandl followed with a double bringing Beers around to score. Jake Miesen picked up an RBI with a base hit moving the score to 7-0.

The sixth inning saw Springfield push their lead into ten-run rule territory, scoring four runs aided by three walks, a hit batter, a New Ulm error, and a big two-run single by Miesen.

Thanks to the 11-0 lead, Wilhelmi's night was shortened to a seven inning complete game victory. The win is Brandon's fifth of the season. Springfield's offense was led by Adams Beers, who had three hits. Jake Miesen added two hits and three RBIs.

The victory evens the Tigers' overall record at 10-10 and improves their league record to 9-7. The Tigers' next two games will be against Redwood Falls. On Wednesday, they'll take on the Redbirds at Riverside Park at 8pm. Then they will travel to Redwood Falls on Monday, July 7 to make up a game that was rained out earlier in the season. Come down and cheer on the Tigers!
