Lakers Top Tigers in Pitcher's Duel

6/20/08

The Tigers' second game against the Hanska Lakers was very similar to their first match-up of the season in Hanska. This time the Tigers were the home team and the result was the opposite as Springfield came up on the short end of a 2-0 score.

Matt Tews was on the mound for the home team. He was able to work his way out of some early jams with the help of some excellent defense. In the top of the first, with runners at second and third, Bryant Krebs came up with a great diving catch to end the inning. In the second, the Tigers turned a double-play to erase a Laker base runner. In the third frame, Krebs made another big play as he threw a Hanska base runner out at the plate for the third out of the inning.

Tews settled in and scattered two hits over the next three innings. In the Hanska half of the seventh, they were able to put together three singles, along with a Springfield error, to score two runs. The two runs were all they would need.

Hanska starter Dayton Larson scattered six hits. The Tigers just weren't able to string together hits, as they never got more than one in an inning. Also, four of the six Springfield hits came with two outs in the inning. The biggest threat came in the bottom of the ninth when Matt Baier led off with a single. Chris Sturm worked a one-out walk to get two runners on, but they would be left stranded.

Tews picked up another hard-luck loss, dropping his record to 1-4 on the year. Brady Schwab led the Tigers at the plate, getting two of the team's six hits.

The loss snaps Springfield's three game winning streak, dropping their overall record to 8-9 and 7-6 in the Tomahawk East. Next up, they'll travel over the Sleepy Eye to battle the Indians on Sunday afternoon. Come out and cheer on the Tigers as they look to start another winning streak!
