Tigers Come Up on Short End of 1-0 Game

Springfield traveled to Leavenworth on Wednesday night. It was another quick, well-played game for both teams, but this time the Tigers were on the losing side of a 1-0 score.
Jake Miesen was on the mound for Springfield. After shaky second and third innings, Miesen faced just two batters over the minimum during his final five innings. He rolled, giving up just one hit after allowing a hit in each of the first two innings.
The Tigers got runners to second and third in the top of the first. Brandon Wilhelmi started the game with a single. Brady Schwab ripped a double to right-center, but Oriole pitcher Gabe Hirsch kept the Tigers off the board.
Springfield had another opportunity in the top of the fifth. After two were out in the inning, Wilhelmi singled. Matt Baier followed with a base hit. Schwab drew a walk to load the bases, but again Hirsch worked his way out of the inning without allowing a run.
Leavenworth got their run in the bottom of the second when they took advantage of a Tiger error, a hit batter, and an RBI single to right by Hirsch to plate the one and only run of the ball game.
Miesen got tagged with the hard luck loss, giving up just three hits and the unearned run, while striking out eight. Springfield had eight hits, but Hirsch was able to keep the Tigers off the scoreboard, notching thirteen strikeouts in his complete game win.
Springfield will take a break from the Tomahawk East this weekend while participating in the Omann Insurance Invitational Tournament in St. Stephen and Sartel. They'll be playing two games on Saturday and one game on Sunday. Tournament action begins at 11:30am as the Tigers take on Winsted in St. Stephen.
