Wilhelmi Leads Tigers to Quick Win

6/1/08

Brandon Wilhelmi was dealing on Sunday afternoon in Hanska. He never faced more than four batters in an inning, as he led Springfield to a 2-0 win that took just one hour and fifty minutes. It was a well-played game for both teams, with many hard hit balls, but most of them found a glove rather than a gap.

The Tigers got runners in scoring position in the first, third and fourth innings, tallying seven hits during the first five innings, but were unable to get on the scoreboard off Hanska starter Aaron Breu. Meanwhile, Wilhelmi was magnificent. The Lakers biggest threat came in the bottom of the fifth. Hanska got a one-out single and stole second. The next batter hit a long fly ball to right-center field. It looked as through it might go for an extra base hit, but Chris Sturm came through with a great over-the-shoulder diving catch to get the second out. A ground out ended the inning with the Laker base runner at third. He was the only runner who would advance that far on the afternoon for the home team.

Brady Mosenden came on in relief for Hanska in the top of the sixth and retired the first ten Tiger batters he faced. Then, with one out in the top of the ninth, Dave Groebner singled up the middle. Matt Tews reached on a error, moving Groebner to third. Adam Beers broke the egg on the scoreboard with a solid single, scoring Groebner and moving Tews to third. Tews scored on a balk, giving Springfield all the runs they would need, with a two run lead.

Wilhelmi gave up a two-out double in the bottom of the ninth, but got the next batter to ground out to third to end the ballgame.

Brandon picked up his third win of the year, moving his record to 3-1. Beers led the Tigers at the plate with three hits and the big RBI to break the scoreless tie. Matt Baier added two hits. Springfield evened their league record at 4-4 with the win and moved to 5-4 overall. Next up, they'll head over to Leavenworth to battle the Orioles on Wednesday night.
