Tigers Stopped By Express

8/26/07

The Tigers season came to an end on Sunday afternoon in Hamburg as they were shutout by the Elko Express, 3-0.  Colby Pack took the loss after pitching a great game.  The Elko starter was just a little bit better, striking out fourteen Springfield batters in eight innings of work.

Springfield's biggest threat of the ballgame came in the first inning when Brady Schwab dropped a two-out double down the leftfield line.  Pack followed with a single, giving the Tigers runners on first and third.  Elko escaped from the jam by getting Ryan Sturm to ground into a force-out to end the inning.

Pack was magnificent on the mound, allowing just one base runner, a walk, during his first seven and two-thirds innings of work.  With two-out in the eighth, Elko got two straight hits.  The shortstop ripped a double to center and the right fielder followed it up with a single, giving the Express a 1-0 lead.  Elko picked up some insurance in the top of the ninth.  Three of the first four batters of the inning reached before the Tigers went to the bullpen to bring on Jon Diede.  Elko got a sacrifice fly and a base hit to plate two additional runs, moving the score to 3-0.

Springfield got two runners on in the bottom of the ninth, but there would be no dramatic comeback in this game.  With the 3-0 win, Elko moves on to the final eight in the 2007 Class C Minnesota State Amateur Baseball Tournament.  They are an excellent team and the Tigers wish them luck as they look to compete for the Class C championship.

The Tigers end their season with a 22-12 record, including a 9-3 postseason mark.  They would like to thank draftees, Colby Pack, Terry Helget, and Brian Hertling for their fine contributions to the tournament run.  Also, a huge thanks goes out to all the fans who followed the team over the course of the season, especially those family members and friends who were always there to support their "boys of summer".  The team should have much the same look next year.  With guys bringing some additional college experience, as well as being another year older and wiser, the Tigers hope to make another run in 2008.  We'll see you starting next May at the ballpark!!
