Déjà Vu For Tigers At Stark

7/27/07

Springfield took a beating at the hands of the Longhorns in the final game of the regular season.  The Tigers were hoping for a different result as they opened round two of the Tomahawk East League playoffs on Friday night at Stark.  However, it was like a bad case of déjà vu for the Tigers as the Stark starting pitcher was the same, the umpires were the same, and unfortunately the result was the same.  With the Longhorns winning a game shortened by the ten-run rule in seven innings.

Matt Tews started on the hill for Springfield and had his roughest outing of the year, by far,  Stark started scoring in the bottom of the first, getting a lead-off single followed by a two-run homer to take a 2-0 lead.  They extended their lead with four additional runs off of Tews in the second, including a three-run home run.  The Tigers quickly trailed, 6-0, after two innings.  The Longhorn bats were relentless in their attack as they added a single run in their third, knocking Tews out of the game.

Jesse Berg came on to pitch in the bottom of the fourth.  The change in pitchers made no difference to Stark as they continued to hit the ball, adding two more runs on a two-run bomb to push the score to 9-0.  The home run was the last hit Berg would give up until the seventh, but the Longhorns still managed to add a run in the bottom of the fifth without the aid of a hit to make the game 10-0.

Stark starter Josh Hadley no-hit the Tigers during the seven inning game.  The game was on the verge of ending, as Hadley retired the first two Tiger batters in the top of the seventh.  However, Bob Fink worked a two-out walk to start a series of five straight walks by Hadley, giving the Tigers two runs and extending the game.  The extension didn't last long, as the Stark bats went right back to work in the bottom of the seventh, getting two runs on two hits and two walks to extend their lead to the ten required to end the game, with a final score of 12-2.

The Tigers will look to even the series when the Longhorns travel to Riverside Park on Sunday night.  A loss and their season is over, so the Tigers find themselves in a must win situation.  Join us at Riverside Park on Sunday!
