Springfield Blanks Leavenworth

7/1/07

Springfield starter Brandon Wilhelmi had a no-hitter through five innings as the Tigers defeated the Orioles, 6-0.  The game was a make-up game that had originally been scheduled as the season opener, but was postponed due to the weather.

Neither starting pitcher surrendered a hit until the bottom of the fourth when Brent Haseleu and Brady Schwab started the inning with back-to-back singles.  Haseleu came around to score on a Leavenworth error and Ryan Sturm drove in Schwab to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead.  Springfield extended their lead in the sixth inning when they took advantage of another Oriole error, along with a Chris Sturm base hit to increase their lead to three.

Leavenworth threatened in the top of the seventh inning, getting the bases loaded with the aid of a couple Tiger errors, but they were unable to get on the board.  Springfield added some insurance in the bottom of the inning.  Kyle Kraska started a one-out rally with a double.  Haseleu and Schwab followed with singles.  Bob Fink drew a walk before Ryan Sturm added another base hit.  The Tigers scored three making the score, 6-0.

The Orioles got two runners on in the eighth, before Wilhelmi worked his way out of the inning with a strikeout.  Brandon gave way to Jesse Berg, who finished up, throwing the ninth inning.

The win is the Tigers' third straight.  They'll look to make it four in a row when they face Redwood Falls on Friday night at Riverside Park.
