Bluejays Hang Around And Beat Tigers Late

6/20/07

The Tigers led the game for seven innings, but unfortunately for them, they play nine innings in the Tomahawk East.  The Essig offense came alive in the final two frames to give the Bluejays a 5-2 victory.

Springfield did all their scoring in the third inning.  Brent Haseleu led off with a single.  Next, Kyle Kraska launched a two-hopper off the fence near the 385 sign in left-center field for a triple, driving in Haseleu.  Matt Baier pushed Kraska across with a ground out, giving the Tigers a 2-0 lead.  Essig had runners on base in every inning except the first.  They finally made their way onto the scoreboard in the top of the fifth, taking advantage of a gift double, making the score 2-1.

Springfield also spent a lot of time on the sacks during the contest.  They had at least one person on base in every inning except the first and the ninth.  Clutch execution however was virtually non-existent as Springfield was 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position.

The Tigers took their 2-1 lead into the top of the eighth, when Essig put together three straight hits, along with a Tiger error to knock out Springfield starter, Jesse Berg.  Brandon Wilhelmi came on to get the final out of the inning via a strikeout, with the score Essig 3, Springfield 2.  Wilhelmi led off the bottom of the eighth with a base hit.  He moved all the way to third on a stolen base and a sacrifice bunt.  Unfortunately, he was left stranded at third as the Tigers squandered their final scoring opportunity of the evening.

Essig sealed the deal in their half of the ninth.  They loaded the bases with two hit batters and a fielder's choice before Terry Helget made the score 5-2 with a two-run single.

Tiger starter, Berg, took the loss, giving up three runs and eleven hits in 7 2/3 innings of work.  The loss drops the Tigers to 8-5 on the year.  They hope to get back on the winning track on Sunday when they'll play two games, starting with Hanska at 3:30 and followed by New Ulm at 7:00pm.  Come on down and wrap up Riverside Days weekend by cheering on the Tigers!
