Tiger Bats Too Much For Grizzlies

6/17/07

Springfield ventured to Searles on a warm and windy Sunday afternoon to battle the Grizzlies.  The Tigers looked to continue their excellent performances in recent games in all three facets of the game: hitting, pitching and defense.  They did just that, earning their second straight victory and fifth win in their last six games.

Matt Tews took the hill for Springfield.  He rolled through the first five innings, allowing just two hits.  The Tigers started the scoring in their half of the third.  Brady Schwab led off with a walk.  Schwab advanced to second on a wild pitch and to third on a Bob Fink ground out.  Ryan Sturm drove in the Tiger's first run with a solid single.  Jon Diede worked a walk and Brandon Wilhelmi followed him with a double, making the score 2-0.  After Jesse Berg lined out to the second baseman, Andy Moritz knocked in two more runs with a base hit.

The score remained 4-0 until Springfield extended their lead in the top of the sixth.  The Tigers scored two runs on base hits by Kyle Kraska, Schwab, Fink, and Sturm.  Tews was cruising along until the bottom of the sixth when the Searles bats came alive.  They put together five hits to score three runs in the inning, drawing them within three, at 6-3.  Springfield got a run back in the seventh, as they took advantage of two Searles errors to finish up the scoring for the afternoon.

Diede earned a three inning save, pitching superbly in the final three innings, facing just one batter over the minimum and allowing no hits.

The Tigers return home on Wednesday night to face the Essig Bluejays.  The 7-3 win moves Springfield's record to 8-4 on the season.  We'll see you at Riverside Park on Wednesday night at 8pm!
