Long Sox Soak Tigers

The undefeated Lamberton Long Sox left Springfield with their perfect record intact after a rain shortened game at Riverside Park. Springfield's record drops to 3-2 after the rain-filled loss. Rain showers fell off-and-on during most of the game. In the top of the ninth, the rain began to fall harder and after a short delay the game was called due to the rain.
The Long Sox jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, taking advantage of a Tiger error, a long run down play and a solid single. They extended their lead to 4-0 in the third, as four of their first five batters reached on base hits. The Tigers threatened in the bottom of the inning, getting the bases loaded, but failing to score. Tiger starter Brandon Wilhelmi held the Long Sox in check during the next three innings allowing just two hits and no more than one base runner per inning. Springfield got their lead-off hitter on base in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, but two double plays and being thrown out attempting to steal killed each of the rallies before they could get going.
Jon Diede came on to pitch for Springfield in the seventh inning. He worked his way out of a bases loaded situation with a double play ball. The Long Sox plated their final run of the evening in the eighth, taking advantage of a lead-off walk, a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly. Springfield started the bottom of the eighth with a walk, but, as was the theme of the evening, were unable to move the runner along.
Lamberton had a runner on second in the top of the ninth when the game was
called due to rain, making the final score, 5-0. Springfield goes on the
road for a game against the Hanska Lakers on Sunday evening.
