Tigers Start 2006 Season With a 10 Inning Victory

Tigers Top Bluejays In 2007 Opener

5/13/07

Springfield opened their 2007 Tomahawk East League season with a trip to Essig to take on the Bluejays.  Essig jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning by stringing together three straight hits off Tiger starter Brandon Wilhelmi. The Tigers roared back in the top of the second, scoring three runs, taking a 3-2 lead.  Brady Schwab led off with a walk.  Matt Baier and Andy Moritz followed with singles.  Jesse Berg drove in the Tigers first run with a bases loaded ground ball.  He reached base on an error.  Baier scored on a Bluejay wild pitch. Essig got one out before Marty Brandl singled to give the Tigers the lead.

Zeroes were the theme of the middle innings, as neither team scored again until the Tigers made it a 4-2 game when Kyle Kraska scored on an Essig error in the top of the seventh.  Starter Wilhelmi left the game after six innings, giving way to new Tiger Kraska.  Kyle's Tiger debut was a rough one.  The Bluejays put five on the board in the bottom of the seventh.  Berg took over on the mound and got the final out in the seventh.  The Tigers got right back to work in their half of the eighth, batting around and scoring four runs.  Springfield's bunting game was a large part of the big inning.  Baier knocked in two runs with a double after the Bluejays walked Schwab to load the sacks.

Berg rolled through the final two innings not allowing a single base runner.  Jesse picked up the win as the Tigers start the season 1-0.  Springfield will play their home opener next Sunday against the St. James A's at 2:00.
