Springfield Battles Back to Down the Long Sox

The Tigers traveled to Lamberton on Sunday night to battle the Long Sox. Springfield needed to get back on the winning track with just two games remaining before the first round of the playoffs are scheduled to begin next weekend. Things didn't look so good as Lamberton jumped out to a lead, putting three runs on the board in the bottom of the second inning. Tiger starter Matt Tews gave up five hits during the inning, leading to the runs. He wouldn't give up another hit until the seventh inning, giving Springfield the time to battle back. The Tigers cut the Long Sox lead to 3-2 in the top of the fourth when Matt Baier and Ryan Sturm led off with base hits. A two sacrifices and a single later the Tigers were down by just one run. Springfield tied the game in the fifth, taking advantage of a Lamberton error and two more sacrifices. Springfield scored two in the seventh to take a 5-3 lead. Two additional runs in the ninth inning provided all the insurance the Tigers would need as they pulled off a 7-3 win. Sacrifice bunts and flies were the theme of the night, with the Tigers getting three of each in the victory. With a record of 11-10, the Tigers will travel to Stark on Tuesday night to finish the regular season, looking to build a two game winning streak to ride into the playoffs.
Matt Tews had perhaps his best outing of the season, overcoming a rough
second inning to shut the Long Sox down for the remainder of the game, picking
up his sixth win of the season. Brandon Wilhelmi and Jesse Berg led the
Tiger bats with two hits each. Matt Baier, Ryan Sturm, Tews, and Andy
Moritz each added one hit to the Tiger cause.
