Tigers Start 2006 Season With a 10 Inning Victory

Tigers Cage the Orioles

7/9/06

The Tigers didn't have long to think about their sobering loss to Hanska earlier in the day as they got right back into action against the Leavenworth Orioles in the nightcap.  Brandon Wilhelmi made his second start of the season and pitched a great game, shutting out the Orioles in a complete game victory.  The game started out looking like it would be a pitchers duel, but the Tigers finally got on the scoreboard with a run in the bottom of the fourth.  Jon Diede led off with a single and scored via a Matt Tews single and Leavenworth error.  Wilhelmi got on a roll in the middle innings, facing just three batters in the fourth through seventh and ninth innings.  Springfield extended their lead to 5-0 with four runs in the fifth.  The offense was spurred by base hits by Wilhelmi and Adam Timm to go along with a pair of doubles by Brady Schwab and Tews.  After going scoreless in the sixth, the Tigers added four additional runs in the bottom of the seventh, batting ten in the inning.  Two of the runs scored on a throwing error when Tews attempted a sacrifice bunt.  The 9-0 win moves Springfield's record to 10-8 on the season.  There are just four games remaining in the regular season and the Tigers are battling for second place in their division of the Tomahawk East.  They'll try to win their second straight when they go to New Ulm on Thursday night to battle the Brewers.

Brandon Wilhelmi pitched all nine innings, tossing a complete game shutout.  Adam Timm led the Tigers with his bat picking up three hits.  Jon Diede and Matt Tews chipped in two hits each.  Wilhelmi, Brady Schwab, Michael Schumacher, Ryan Sturm, Marty Brandl, Chris Sturm and Brent Haseleu rounded out the offense on the evening adding one hit each to the Tiger total.
