Tigers Start 2006 Season With a 10 Inning Victory

Tigers Squander Opportunities in Sleepy Eye

7/5/06

Springfield traveled to Sleepy Eye on Wednesday night to take on the Indians.  A few statistics sum up the evening for the Tigers: 15 runners left on base, four hits, 15 strikeouts, strikeouts to end six of the first seven innings, five errors.  Springfield came out and took the lead in the top of the first when Brandon Wilhelmi reached on an error and was driven in by a Brady Schwab double.  The score held until the bottom of the third when Sleepy Eye scored four runs on three hits, a walk, and an error.  Sleepy Eye seemed to have all the luck as several of their hits were of the "stick out the bat and it falls into the right place" variety.  The Indians increased their lead to 7-1 with one run in the fourth and two in the fifth.  Even though they faced a large deficit, the Tigers weren't about to quit.  They scored three times in the top of the seventh to bring the tally to 7-4.  Springfield took advantage of four walks and a huge two run triple down the right field line by Ryan Sturm to get their three runs.  Two runners were stranded in the eighth and one in the ninth as the Tigers were unable to add any additional runs.  The Tigers will be back in action on Friday night in Redwood Falls.

Adam Timm started on the hill for Springfield.  He labored through four innings giving up five runs, four of which were earned on seven hits.  Jesse Berg came on in relief and pitched well, yielding just one earned run in four innings of work.  With the bats, the highlights were limited, though three of the four Tiger hits were for extra bases.  Schwab and Berg each had a double.  Ryan Sturm added a triple.  While Matt Baier contributed a single.
