Tigers Start 2006 Season With a 10 Inning Victory

Bats Locked Up in Leavenworth

6/7/06

The Tigers lost their second straight game on Wednesday night in Leavenworth.  Oriole pitcher Matt Mathiowetz baffled the Springfield hitters giving up no runs on just one hit, while striking out eleven in seven innings of work.  Tiger pitcher Jesse Berg pitched very well in his second start of the season.  He gave up just one earned run in seven innings of work.  Springfield fell behind in the bottom of the first when Mathiowetz hit a solo homer, giving the Orioles a 1-0 lead.  It stayed 1-0 until the sixth, when Leavenworth picked up another run, aided by a Springfield error.  They added two more in Berg's final inning of work to move their lead to 4-0.  The Tigers filled the bases with two singles and a walk in the top of the eighth.  Two runs scored on a wild pitch on strike three, but that was all the Tigers could muster.  The 4-2 loss moves the Tigers record on the year to 5-3.  They look to get back on the winning track Friday night at home against the New Ulm Brewers.

Jesse Berg and Brandon Wilhelmi handled the mound duties for Springfield.  Both pitched well, allowing a total of only one earned one.  At the plate, the Tigers were limited to just three hits, once each by Matt Baier, Brady Schwab, and Jesse Berg.
